Columbia Course Planner

Privacy

The short version: the planner keeps only what it needs to save your plans, never sells or shares it, and deletes it when you ask.

If you don’t sign in

Your plans and your outside credit (the AP and IB exams, scores, and other credit you list) are saved only in this browser (its local storage). Nothing is sent to the planner’s database. Clearing this site’s data in your browser deletes them.

What’s stored when you sign in

  • Your Columbia or Barnard email, to sign you in with a one-time code. There are no passwords.
  • Your plans: their names, the courses in each semester, your majors and minors, and the choices you make in them (placed out, approved by an advisor, exempt).
  • Your outside credit: the AP and IB exams and scores and the other credit (transfer and similar) you list in Before Columbia.

Requests and problem reports

If you request a major or report a problem with a program, the planner stores what you wrote, which program it’s about, and the time. If you’re signed in, it also stores your account’s id (not your email) so repeat reports can be told apart. You can send these without signing in.

Where it’s kept, and who can see it

Everything above is stored in Supabase, a hosted database. Its access rules let your account read and change only your own plans. Requests and reports can be sent from the app but not read through it; only the planner’s maintainer can read them.

Signing in sets a cookie that keeps you signed in. The planner sets no other cookies.

Sharing

Nobody else can see your plans unless you create a share link (“Share…” in a plan’s ⋯ menu). Anyone with that link can view that one plan: its name, courses, and programs, but not your email. You can turn sharing off or replace the link at any time, and the old link stops working.

Analytics

The planner uses Vercel Web Analytics to count page views. It uses no cookies and doesn’t identify you or follow you across sites.

Deleting your data

You can delete any plan yourself, from its menu. To delete your account and everything stored with it, email columbiacourseplanner@gmail.com from the email you sign in with. Your account, plans, and outside credit are deleted; requests and reports you sent are kept without your account’s id.
